‘Safe Word’: An Erotic Pseudo-Documentary From A Found Footage Master [Unnamed Footage Festival 2023]

JAPAN – Japanese director Koji Shiraishi is known for his strange and terrifying work within the found footage subgenre. From his masterpiece Noroi: The Curse to his more recent works like A Record of Sweet Murder, Shiraishi has a taste for cosmic horror from a first-person perspective. But now, Shiraishi is deviating from his normally scheduled programming to deliver a piece of queer, sex-positive found footage about embracing sexuality and living without shame. His new film Safe Word is a pseudo-documentary about BDSM, kink, and falling in love.

Safe Word is a Japanese pink film, which is essentially soft-core porn. Oftentimes they have lower budgets and lean into sexual themes without showing genitals or explicit and unsimulated sex. Safe Word specifically is part of the Roman Porno series. This series is the work of the famous Japanese studio Nikkatsu, which has been producing pink films for 50 years. Shiraishi’s take is unapologetically queer and silly, reveling in sexuality but never taking it too seriously.

‘Blood, Sex and Booze’: the Green Day song that features a dominatrix

Even though it’s easy to let loose when on the live stage, the studio always provides an open canvas to create something that might be able to come across when playing live in front of people. It’s easy to experiment, but Green Day also saw it as an opportunity to have some fun.

As the band reached the early 2000s, they started to wane in popularity for the first time. After Dookie set everything on fire and pushed the band on to a new level in 1994, Billie Joe Armstrong began experimenting with the kind of songs he wanted to write for the band, including material not necessarily confined to pop-punk. Though Nimrod got the ball rolling with different material, Warning was where the gloves came off, ready for musical experimentation.

Across each song, Green Day began experimenting with what they could do in the confines of rock, embracing acoustic instruments on the title track and ‘Minority’. There were also some lyrical departures like ‘Blood Sex and Booze’, where Armstrong sings about wanting to be sexually satisfied through S&M. This wasn’t the first time that Green Day sang about something like bondage (look to Tre Cool’s ‘Dominated Love Slave’ for that distinction), but it was the first time that the band got an actual sex worker in the studio with them.

Woman sentenced for spitting on person she knew from dominatrix scene

UK – GLASGOW – A BAR worker who spat on a woman she knew from the dominatrix scene has been ordered to do unpaid work.

Kimberley Mitchell, 28, assaulted the 41-year-old woman on two occasions in February and March 2019.

Mitchell initially spat a cocktail on the face of the victim at Barca bar in Glasgow city centre.

She then carried out a similar act at a house party in Uplawmoor, East Renfrewshire.
