NETHERLANDS – Within the BDSM scene, much attention is paid to visible players, such as seductive Mistresses and tough submissives. These are people who are able to distinguish themselves or (whether voluntarily or not) put themselves on a pedestal. This is understandable, as visibility attracts attention. But at the same time, there are also those who have been faithfully in their positions for years. Not to show themselves off, but to carry the scene themselves. People who connect, even when there’s no applause.

This blog post is one of those moments of reflection; simply because it’s high time. Time to highlight two men who, for me and many others, are invaluable to the Dutch BDSM scene:
Tom Verhoeven of BDSMradio  and  Bert Wibo of MASSAD .

What they do is often taken for granted. As if it’s all perfectly normal. And as if it will always remain that way. But nothing is self-evident. Especially not in a vulnerable scene, where people who stand their ground are needed.

Passion is not a license for invisibility

There’s a persistent misconception that passion is enough. That if someone does something with love, it doesn’t require recognition. That appreciation only comes with commercial success or visible power. But passion takes energy. Passion takes time. It requires sacrifice.

Both Tom and Bert have been investing structurally in the scene for years. Not incidentally, but consistently. With everything that entails: organization, responsibility, criticism, hassle, doubt, worries. You don’t do it because it’s easy and profitable. You do it because you believe in something. And precisely for that reason, appreciation isn’t a luxury, but a necessity to make it clear that this work matters. That it’s being seen. Because it doesn’t happen automatically.

Amsterdam used to be the Gay Capitol of the world and a paragon of sex-inclusive tolerance. Now, it’s become a city where gay couples no longer dare to walk hand in hand because, at best, they’ll be bombarded with hisses and insults. Or worse, beaten up. This is largely due to young people with a migration background. A 2008 study by the University of Amsterdam (UvA) indicated that 36% of the perpetrators were native Dutch, 36% had a Moroccan background, and the rest had other nationalities.

These days, our stories are increasingly appearing in films that reach major theaters and then stream onto mainstream streaming platforms. A stark choice between niche and mainstream, romance and coming-out, lighthearted and political is becoming less common, resulting in a surprisingly diverse range of stories.

If any film demonstrates how broadly queer cinema has become, it’s  Pillion . Abusive Dominant is someone who abuses the power dynamics within BDSM. This can happen by ignoring boundaries, selectively interpreting consent, or by causing emotional, physical, or mental harm without care,  aftercare  , or accountability. Power then no longer becomes a role to be held, but a license to gratify one’s own needs.

BDSM requires more than courage and desire

BDSM  is all about trust. About surrender, which can only arise when there’s safety. Power in BDSM is never separate from responsibility. And that’s precisely where things sometimes go wrong. Not everyone who calls themselves  Dominant  can or wants to bear that responsibility. When someone uses the role to feed their ego, make a quick buck, or get sex without truly considering the other person, a misalignment arises. This often doesn’t feel wrong immediately, but it does cause friction.

He’s Accused of Killing His Wife in an Alleged BDSM Plot: Here’s How Au Pair Ex-Lover Will Be Key at Trial

Brendan Banfield is charged with murdering his wife, Christine, and a man, Joseph Ryan, who authorities say was lured to their home

  • Brendan Banfield is on trial in connection with the deaths of his wife, Christine, and Joseph Ryan in 2023

  • Banfield’s former au pair previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter and reportedly told prosecutors that she was having an affair with him — and that they concocted a plan to lure Ryan using a BDSM ruse that left both Christine and Ryan dead

  • Christine was fatally stabbed, whereas Ryan was shot and killed nearby

The trial of a Virginia man accused of orchestrating the murder of his wife while he was having an affair with their au pair is beginning Tuesday, Jan. 13.

Brendan Banfield is charged with murder in connection with the 2023 deaths of his wife, Christine Banfield, and Joseph Ryan.

USA – Christine was fatally stabbed on on Feb. 23, 2023 in her home in Herndon, Va. Ryan was found dead from gunshot wounds nearby.

Prosecutors have alleged that Brendan had started an affair with Juliana Peres Magalhaes in 2022, after she began working for the family as an au pair and moved into the home with the couple and their 4-year-old daughter.

A month prior to the killings, Brendan is accused of creating a profile on Fetlife.com, a bondage website, posing as Christine. Prosecutors said he began communicating with Ryan and allegedly began discussing a “consensual sexual encounter involving restraints used on her, her clothing being cut off with a knife he brought, and other violent sexual role play,” prosecutors said.
