NETHERLANDS – More than two-thirds of young adults have come into contact with violent pornographic images, often at a young age. This is evident from research by the Verwey-Jonker Institute, commissioned by the child rights organization Defence for Children.

Almost a quarter of the more than one thousand respondents accidentally came into contact with this type of image at the age of 14 or younger. In addition, one in six indicated that they had searched for it themselves. Also, almost a quarter of the respondents between the ages of 18 and 27 say they have seen images of child sexual abuse.

Europe wants an age limit for pornography. Nieuws van de Dag had a discussion about it, as can be seen in this video .

To startle

Many young people who encounter such images indicate that they were shocked by them. They mention feelings such as disgust, shame, fear, and sadness. According to Defence for Children, exposure to violence in pornography can be harmful to sexual development and lead to mental health problems.

By violent content, the researchers mean incest, sexual assault, physical and verbal violence, coercion, and exploitation, among other things. Violent sex for which consent has been given, such as BDSM (Bondage, Discipline, and Sadomasochism), also falls under this category. According to the researchers, it is “difficult for viewers to determine whether it involves consensual BDSM or non-consensual violent pornography.”
