GERMANY – BERLIN – You walk into a nightclub and suddenly you see Angela Merkel in a very spicy kinky outfit. In Berlin they are not surprised by this. In the extravagant Berlin nightclub KitKatClub you can find works of art by the former chancellor who has been renamed the figurehead of sexual freedom by the artist, says Germany expert Ulrike Nagel in dutch radio programm Bureau Buitenland.
“It is quite an extravagant club. You can dance there, but they also have a sauna, a swimming pool and a kinky basement, so you have an idea of what it’s like there,” Nagel describes. And there are now special t-shirts, dresses and photos for sale on which Angela Merkel is depicted as kinky Merkel in a latex costume.
Friendly mama look
The artworks come from Berlin-based Spanish artist Alejandro Berlino. According to her own words, the artist chose Merkel because she is a world-famous politician with a strong charisma and a friendly mama look. The extreme contrast appealed to him. On the one hand the serious politician, on the other hand the fetish culture. That fetish culture is itself a symbol of freedom, and Mutti Merkel, as his perfect muse, is a way of honoring that freedom.
According to Nagel, this is not the first time that Merkel has come into the news revealingly. “Her fashion was basically always the same. The same jackets, in different colors. With a small trip in 2008. To the opera in Oslo she wore a dress that was cut rather deep. The photo of her cleavage has become famous, but as far as we know she has never shown so much nakedness again. You should therefore see the paintings primarily as something they are: art.”
