The Model County bought more sex toys than any other county in Ireland over the past twelve months, according to playblue.ie, beating off stiff competition from neighbouring Carlow, which has held the kinky title for the past five years running.

Residents of the Dolmen County this year came second for splashing out on the store’s best-selling toys, like a €30 11-piece bondage kit and €60 Satisfyer wand, while Wicklow natives came third.

“The sexy South East continues to be the pleasure capital of Ireland,” says Richie Cullen of the Tallaght-based store, which also does a roaring trade online.

“Carlow, Wexford and Wicklow buy the most sex toys per population. In Wexford, vibrators and bondage is bigger than the national average, and in Wicklow, they seem more partial to sexual enhancers and lingerie than most.

“At the end of the day, vibrators are still the backbone of the sex toys purchased in Ireland, with vibrators and dildos making up 40pc of all sales.”

Donegal, Limerick and Monaghan were the least frisky in 2024, according to the sex shop, which hired a number of ‘toy testers’ during the year, and is currently seeking more.

But it seems the extreme weather events of recent months inspired more people to snuggle up under the duvet with their loved one, or just alone with their phone.

“We had a few notable spikes throughout the year, including Storm Darragh earlier this month and Storm Isha in January,” reveals Richie.

“The biggest impact is always the weather, but the Olympics and Euro 2024 also had a knock-on effect on sales, with vibrators on the rise during big sporting occasions.

“But the big change this year is in lubes and enhancers, which increased by over 22pc, particularly liquid enhancers like Orgie Orgasm Drops and Dragon Delay Spray.

“The other big winner continues to be male sex toys, which grew by 9pc, and are now seen as much less taboo than in the past. The technology being pumped into these toys is amazing – old favourites like Fleshlight are still strong, but new brands like ArcWave are becoming firm favourites too.

“We also noticed far more couples coming into the store together,” he continues. “Years ago, it was generally 60pc women, 30pc men, and 10pc couples.

“Now we would get 30-35pc couples, showing that sexual pleasure is discussed more in relationships and that modern couples are actively exploring how to make their sex lives better together.”
