AUSTRALIA – Queer street artist Lauren YS has spoken out about a controversial mural depicting a bound and gagged woman, explaining the artwork on the side of a Fitzroy building is all about “empowerment and queer selfhood”.
Speaking to the Herald Sun, Lauren YS — who uses they/them pronouns — said the art emerged from a curiosity to try painting latex as a technical challenge and as an homage to shibari, a Japanese form of rope bondage.
The mural titled Kinbakubi was requested by a tenant of the building who asked them to “paint something LGBTQ+ inspired”.

As I have written about a number of times over the years, a major pet peeve (I guess if it’s “major,” it’s no longer a “pet peeve,” right?) I have is when historical fiction is unfair to historical figures for the sake of needing an easy “villain” or “victim.” The example I often use is Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton. Lin Manuel Miranda wanted a character to talk about the sexism of the era, and that’s totally fair, but Angelica Schuyler didn’t quite fit the role that Miranda wanted her to play, so he just made up stuff to make her fit better.

Last year, when I was visiting London, I became friends with a professional (and quite famous) dominatrix, Eva Oh. I was working on a project I wanted to interview her for and she graciously agreed. A one-hour meeting turned into a lunch of underground dumplings, a shop for new stockings and an invitation to one of London’s most prolific sex parties.
