Countess Diamond, who works in adult entertainment, reveals the difficulties she has faced with banks and payment service providers

UK – Countess Diamond, who runs an adult entertainment company employing two people, works as a dominatrix. Part of her work includes what she describes as “financial control”, which involves helping people plan and achieve financial goals.
On Friday, her bank account – held with a major high street bank – was closed without explanation. She believes this is because she works in the adult entertainment industry. Here she tells us her story of her difficulty with banks, even though her business is legal.
“I’ve been in this industry for seven years. I run an adult entertainment business which includes working as a dominatrix. Part of my job includes building clients’ confidence.
“I am registered with Companies House, have an accountant to deal with my tax affairs but even so, I have long struggled with payments for my work because the accounts I use are often closed without explanation. Now my mum takes payments on my behalf, and forwards them to me.
“On Friday I found my account with a high street bank was frozen. Someone from the bank emailed me to say they wanted me to get in touch as they needed more information about my account, adding it is to keep my account safe and also to make sure I am meeting legal and regulatory requirements. I then noticed I couldn’t access my account meaning no payments can go in or out.
“I provided everything they needed immediately but my account is frozen while they investigate further. The bank will not say what exactly they are investigating or why. I presume it is because of my line of work. I think they will close the account completely soon because this isn’t the first time it has happened.
“Previously, Stripe, which is a payment service provider, stopped me using their services and put a black mark against my name after it discovered what I do, even though I was upfront and honest and told them it was all legal.
“I also use TikTok, a short video streaming service, where people can make payments to me via the social media channel. I get paid through it’s ‘creator fund’ where the more views I get, the more money I get. The payments were run by Paypal and the payments were stopped. I don’t know if that was down to Paypal or Tiktok.
“That my mum now has to take my payments is totally embarrassing but her name doesn’t get flagged up as a being a risk. It’s also extra work for her. She then sends some funds to me and often I’ll tell her to keep the rest.
“This all has created a number of difficulties for me. I can no longer take payments on my website since my bank account has been frozen, which makes it is near impossible to keep working.
“I am also unable to pay her employees and I have had to take out a substantial loan from a client in order to pay them, which is embarrassing.
“One of the people who works for me has a child and they all need to pay their rent and mortgage. I want to be able to pay them but getting cut off by banks and payment providers means I have to chop and change what I do because a payment processor won’t support use on my website.
“Since my account has been frozen since Friday, I don’t know how I will create a work-around if my account is closed completely as I am running out of options.
“It’s frightening. I feel so vulnerable. Unless the bank can show me what is legally wrong, I don’t see why I am not entitled to have an account like everyone else. Just because someone doesn’t morally agree with what I do, I shouldn’t be banned.”
i contacted Stripe, which said that, in its terms and conditions on its website, clients must not use its services for mature audience content depicting nudity or explicit sexual acts.
TikTok added it has very strict rules that ban nudity and sexual content. It also bans people using links to take them to other sexually explicit websites.
A PayPal spokesperson said: “Anyone in the UK over the age of 18 can open and use a PayPal account, regardless of their occupation. We require all customers to abide by our Acceptable Use Policy and other terms and conditions.
“We may discontinue our relationship with account holders who are found to violate our policies, in line with applicable regulations and legal obligations. For privacy reasons, we cannot comment on specific accounts.”
