RUSSIA – Nadya Tolokonnikova, the Pussy Riot bandleader and ‘dominatrix’ has been arrested over alleged disrespect to ‘believers’ after years of anit-Putin songs, with the activist arrested in absentia earlier today (November 21)
Russian officials have ordered the arrest of Pussy Riot alumni and “dominatrix” Nadya Tolokonnikova over alleged disrespect after the star made songs aimed at president Vladimir Putin.
Tolokonnikova, 34, who was branded a “foreign agent” by the Russian Ministry of Justice in 2021, was arrested in absentia today (November 21). The Pussy Riot star was charged with insulting the feelings of religion believers.
No further details are yet available on the activist’s charges, who faces a two-month arrest should she return back over the Russian border.
Fellow Pussy Riot members Maria Alyokhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich were sentenced to three years in prison alongside Tolokonnikova back in 2012 for “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred”. Now, the global art movement contributor has been labelled a “foreign agent”.
It is not the first musician to be arrested in absentia by the Russian government this week, with Eurovision Song Contest winner Jamala also flagged for arrest upon re-entering the country.
Pussy Riot leader Tolokonnikova, the punk rock feminist turned dominatrix, is now a target for the Russian government should she return to the country. It comes after comments from the bandleader regarding turning Putin “into ashes”.
She has since set up an adult entertainment account and shared details of the dominatrix-themed branch of her work. She said of her work on Onlyfans back in 2021: “It did empower me. I was pleasantly surprised by people who subscribed to my page.
“It turned into this really interesting exercise for me as a feminist to eventually explore my own boundaries and the boundaries of other people. I exist on an OnlyFans page in the role of the dominatrix because, first of all, it’s fun.”
Her work on a recent Pussy Riot song aptly titled Putin’s Ashes drew considerable attention, with Tolokonnikova saying of the track: “This is a prayer in which we summon Putin and turn him into ashes.
“And it’s done in conjunction with a performance [from] a few months ago in the desert. We burned a giant Putin portrait, and it turned into a video that is going to be released sometime early next year.”
