Ex-wife of Steven West testifies she read him passages of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ months before her twin sister’s murder

USA – WORCESTER – Months before her twin sister’s killing, Caitlin Haden would read passages from “Fifty Shades of Grey” to her then husband Steven West. She never had any desire to act out some of the bondage or other sex acts scribed in the popular erotic book.
Her sister, Alyssa Haden, the 20-year-old woman West is accused of killing in October 2012, also never wanted to be tied up during sex, according testimony in West’s murder trial Tuesday.
The defense for West is claiming Alyssa Haden liked to have her arms tied behind her back and her face down in a pillow during sex and she was accidentally killed during the act. The prosecution said Alyssa had no interest in the rough sexual acts and West killed his wife’s twin sister inside their Pleasant Street apartment in October 2012.
Alyssa Haden died from suffocation on the night of Oct. 9 into Oct. 10, 2012. West, now 24, weighed 400 pounds at the time of the killing.
“I read him a few passages from the book,” Caitlin Haden, West’s ex-wife, testified in Worcester Superior Court. Eventually West would ask his wife once a week if he could tie her up.
“I did not want to do that,” she told prosecutor Brett Dillon.
Caitlin Haden, 23, told defense attorney James G. Reardon Jr. she only began reading her husband passages of the book in the summer of 2012 because he was interested in what she was reading. She said West never forced himself on her or tied her up while they were married.
Speaking quietly while testifying in the murder case against her ex-husband, Caitlin Haden said she met West online a couple years before her sister’s killing. The two chatted online and eventually shared phone numbers and Myspace.com information.
When asked about his weight and if it turned her off, Caitlin Haden responded, “His personality outweighed that.”
Alyssa Haden had no attraction to West, according to her sister. The defense contends Alyssa Haden and West had a sexual relationship for several months.
Caitlin Haden, who has two children with West, took a bus to Indiana to meet West. They stayed in a hotel for about a week and then West returned back to Spencer with her. West stayed in a tent for a little bit, but eventually moved in with Caitlin Haden.
In September 2012, Alyssa Haden moved in with her sister and brother-in-law. West sometimes made comments about Alyssa Haden, her sister testified.
“He would tell me she was too skinny for his taste,” Caitlin Haden said.
