UK – ACTOR Hugh Grant’s privacy group were branded hypocrites yesterday after claiming details of John Whittingdale’s affair with a bondage madam should have been made public sooner.

Hacked Off, which campaigns against intrusion into celebrity lifestyles, was mercilessly mocked for contradicting itself.

Founding member Grant, 55, was arrested in Los Angeles and fined for paying for a prostitute’s services in 1995.

Hacked Off claimed a handful of people knew of Mr Whittingdale’s affair and chose not to publish details because of his power in deciding matters of Press regulation.

Hacked Off spokesman Brian Cathcart said: “The newspapers have had cast-iron public interest justifications to publish this story since the beginning.”

But the claim was branded a “preposterous conspiracy theory” by Bob Satchwell of the Society Of Editors.

Mr Satchwell said: “The idea that the newspapers and broadcasters could all get together and say: ‘We are not running the story’ is just silly.”

Love Actually star Grant helped set up the privacy group in 2011.

Good Morning Britain Piers Morgan mocked the group, tweeting: “Has Hugh Grant demanded the press expose single man’s fling with a hooker yet?”
