TAIWAN – TAPEI -Taiwanese adult film actress, known professionally as Kumi, has emerged as one of the most closely watched newcomers in the local AV industry despite having been in the business for less than a year. Tall and slender rather than voluptuous, she has quickly built a following through her highly adaptable image and performance styles, earning the nickname “the shapeshifter” within Taiwan’s adult entertainment scene.

Now 28, Kumi presents a youthful, innocent appearance, but says her private life includes a long‑standing interest in BDSM. She acknowledges that bondage and sadomasochistic practices remain taboo for many, and are often misunderstood. “People who don’t understand us think we are perverted or extreme, because this isn’t a way of having sex that most people can accept,” she says. “But it is not something dirty or terrifying.”
Because BDSM is still outside the comfort zone of much of mainstream society, Kumi, who describes herself as able to switch between dominant and submissive roles, usually looks online for partners who share similar interests. She says she has experimented with both male and female partners and has also taken part in encounters involving five men and herself as the sole woman. Among the activities she has tried are urination play, inflicting pain on male genitalia and trampling people barefoot. While acknowledging that such practices may appear dangerous to outsiders, she stresses that she has studied BDSM for years and insists that safety is non‑negotiable: “You must have proper knowledge. Everything has to stay within safe limits.”
Strikingly, Kumi says she does not expect her boyfriends in everyday life to participate in these practices. She recalls one former relationship in which, before they began dating, she was completely open about having a “master” and engaging in physical BDSM play with him, emphasising there was no romantic attachment involved. Her then partner initially claimed he could accept this, but later changed his mind. “He thought it was only online chat,” she says. “When he realised it wasn’t, he told me, ‘If you really love me, you should cut this off.’ But I had already explained everything before we got together.” After repeated attempts to reconcile their differences, he insisted that any continued contact in the BDSM context was unacceptable and complained that she was making him “lose face”.
Before entering the adult film world, Kumi spent nearly five years working at a high‑end hostess club, where she became one of the venue’s most popular employees. Paradoxically, she says the part of the job she found hardest to tolerate was being groped or inappropriately touched by customers. She is grateful, however, that colleagues and staff in the club mostly protected and looked out for her, and that many supported her when she eventually chose to resign and move into the AV industry.
During her time in nightlife, she occasionally crossed paths with well‑known personalities. She recalls one incident involving a popular internet celebrity who proposed a bet over an unopened bottle of premium liquor: if she could down it in one go, he would give her NT$50,000 in cash. “I managed half the bottle before I couldn’t hold it and vomited what I had already drunk,” she says. “He told me it was fine and still gave me NT$20,000.”
Kumi notes, however, that not everyone in the hostess trade is so fortunate. She says she has heard of women being subjected to degrading and abusive treatment by powerful clients. In one alleged incident, a senior businessman reportedly pushed fingers coated in chilli sauce into a woman’s genitals; in another, a hostess was said to have been forced to swallow a live goldfish. Although her own annual earnings once reached a million New Taiwan dollars, Kumi, who describes herself as naturally curious and romantic, eventually decided to step out of her comfort zone and explore a completely different path.
Her move into adult films began by chance. During a casual sexual encounter, she met a professional male AV performer and became intrigued when she learned of his occupation. That encounter sparked her interest in the industry, and with his introduction she decided to try filming herself. She says her family has long been aware both of her previous work in hospitality venues and of her current career in pornography. “I’m not cheating anyone out of money,” she says. “As long as my mindset is right and I protect myself, it’s acceptable.”
