NETHERLANDS – Is someone interested in your recently worn (and perhaps still warm) shoes, is a buyer trying to pay for your dining table with fake money, or are you welcome to come pick up that chandelier, but do you have to go on a date with the salesperson?
For the Marktplaatsmafketels section, we speak to women with absurd experiences on online sales platforms. Today, Shannah (36) tells her story. Want to share your story too? Email lezers@linda.nl .
Uggs
A few years ago, Shannah put her Uggs up for sale on Marktplaats, hoping to get a nice sum for them. Soon, she received a very unusual message from an interested party. “He called himself a slave. In his first message, he stated that he was a collector of worn shoes. He wanted to know if the Uggs had been worn often, but especially if that was recent,” Shannah recounts.
Next, he asked if I was blessed with sweaty feet. I was sitting on the couch with a friend at the time, and we both burst out laughing. We thought it was funny, but at the same time, pretty gross.
They really have to smell
Shannah initially did not respond to the messages. “After that, he became a bit more pushy. As a joke, I replied that that wasn’t very polite for a ‘slave’. I received an apology for that. He wrote: ‘Sorry, you’re right. That is not how it should be for a slave.’ When I indicated that I didn’t have sweaty feet, he thought that was a shame. ‘The pairs I’m looking for really have to smell, so I doubt this will work,’ he wrote. He hoped it would, because ‘he was happy to be humiliated by it’.”
Then he came up with another proposal. “He asked if he could try on a pair of socks first. If he liked them, he hoped to do business with me more often. But he asked if I would wear them for a few days first – and absolutely not wash them.”
He is even willing to pay quite a bit for them. “I thought: well, if you want to shell out a few hundred euros for them, fine. I considered it for a moment, but he immediately started talking about when he could pick them up. I indicated that I only wanted to ship them, but he kept insisting. So I immediately backed off and didn’t respond anymore. The idea that he would show up at my door was a firm no.”
