Standing on The Mall one Saturday afternoon in mid-May, besides the constant tourists grinning at the royal splendour, you’d notice more boorish police than usual and plenty of St George’s cross bearers, blearily wending their way home from uniting the kingdom. You’d also spot the odd queer, Asian and otherwise, dressed mostly in wisps, picking their way towards the ICA. Inside, looping for hours in the dark of the tiny Cinema 2, are mountains made of gay cowboy asses and grinning teenagers in the back of a speeding truck showing off their tattoos. Accompanying this shorts programme, a lot of performance.

Founded as a film festival in 2020 by Yi Wang, Queer East is a genuinely multi-disciplinary affair, showcasing queer work from East and South East Asia and the diaspora, via expanded programmes from readings to nature walks and exhibitions. It arrives at London venues each year – including the Barbican, Museum of the Home, the BFI and more – as well as touring some of its programme regionally and internationally. Since 2024, Queer East’s performance strand has grown keenly more ambitious.

This year features the debuts in this country of No. 60 by Pichet Klunchun Dance Company, and Bunny by Daniel Kok and Luke George, besides DAYTRIP, the all-day takeover of the ICA comprising a short films programme, performances and workshops, curated by Bart Seng Wen Long. I took part in Queer East’s first emerging critics’ scheme in 2024 as a theatre interloper and have been in its orbit since. This year I caught more performance than films, finding old movement, new pain, and miles and miles of rope.

ITALY -Riccardo Sansebastiano, 61, died after suffocating during a game involving collars and handcuffs with Gianna Damonte, 67 – who has been ordered to pay compensation to his family.

A woman who killed her lover during a sex game that went dramatically wrong has been ordered by an court to pay the victim’s family ÂŁ390,000 damages. Regional transport boss Riccardo Sansebastiano, 61, died after suffocating during a bondage session involving collars and handcuffs with his lover architect Gianna Damonte, now aged 67. She was eventually convicted of manslaughter in 2022 after a long running case and sentenced to a year in jail – though the judge said Mr Sansebastiano had “actively contributed to his death” by choosing the equipment used. Now a civil court in Alessandria, Italy, where the couple lived, has ordered Damonte to pay ÂŁ390,000 damages to the man’s wife and three children. With fees and interest, the final payout could top ÂŁ400,000.

So how is it that in BDSM all of that vanishes like snow in the sun, and you even find it incredibly exciting, stimulating, and arousing?

USA – OCALA – FLORIDA – A Florida man will face a jury on charges he murdered a woman whom he met on a fetish website this fall, a judge announced on Wednesday.

Dwain Hall, 54, has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder and kidnapping in the death of Sonia Exelby, 32, who disappeared from her home in England on Oct. 13, 2025.

Prosecutors say Hall and Exelby met on a fetish website and communicated with one another for approximately two years before Exelby purchased a plane ticket to visit Hall in the United States. Hall’s alleged profile name on the fetish website was “alphasadist.”

Hall initially denied knowing the victim and later admitted to having sex with her but claimed he didn’t want to, police said. As the conversation continued, Hall allegedly told officers that he “did grab Exelby around the throat for ‘light bondage’ but offered that he did not use any ropes.” He went on to describe the sex as “vanilla.” Eventually, Hall allegedly told officers that over the two years he had spoken to the victim, the two had discussed “bondage, suicide and her desire to have someone kill her.”

Left alone for the weekend by his parents, he fasted for two days, then borrowed as much logging chain as he could carry from his father’s garage and elaborately rigged himself up in his mother’s fruit cellar. After several hours of bondage, he began to feel weightless, as if he were dangling from a cable above a chasm. “Finally, all the consciousness I had left was in the center of my head. It was like a little light, and finally it went click. . . . And what I saw with this was my body lashed to the wall, about ten feet away.” This was in 1947, in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Loomis had already been experimenting for several years with piercing, self-bondage, and sensory deprivation—activities he collectively termed “body play”—as well as photography, which he used to meticulously document his results.
