BDSM Communities Are Less Rapey Than the General Population

Source: Broadly.vice.com.

USA – According to new research from Northern Illinois University, participants in “cultures of consent” like BDSM engage in less rape myth acceptance, benevolent sexism, and victim blaming.

A new study suggests our nation’s children would be better off learning about consensual sex from dungeon masters than their awkward gym teachers.

After measuring rates of “hostile sexism, benevolent sexism, rape myth acceptance, victim blaming, expectation of sexual aggression, and acceptance of sexual aggression” in three groups, researchers at Northern Illinois University found that BDSM communities with “cultures of consent” held significantly lower rape-supportive beliefs compared to college undergraduates and the general public.

“BDSM culture is built around affirmative consent norms, including talking about and negotiating a scene way beforehand,” Kathryn Klement, one of the study’s authors, told Broadly. “It’s about not just seeing sexual consent as an on-off switch—yes or no—but as a continuous process.”

Another poll backs this up. According to a large survey of BDSM practitioners conducted by the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom (NCSF) in 2012, at least 85 percent of respondents endorsed statements like “a person can revoke consent at any time,” “consent should be an ongoing discussion in a relationship,” and “clear, overt consent must be given before a scene.” Over 93 percent of respondents endorsed the statement “consent is not valid when coerced.”

To test whether individuals in the sadomasochist world held fewer rape-supportive beliefs, the researchers at Northern Illinois asked them whether they agreed with a number of victim-blaming statements, like “if a girl goes to a room alone with a guy at a party, it is her fault if she is raped” and “rape happens when a guy’s sex drive goes out of control.” They also measured how respondents felt about sexual aggression being used in various scenarios, like if a man was stoned, drunk, or so turned on that he “couldn’t stop.”

The results showed that the kink community had significantly lower levels of benevolent sexism (using sexist stereotypes to give women backhanded compliments, for example), rape myth acceptance, and victim blaming compared to members of the general public recruited online, as well as to college students who took the survey for class credit.

The study seems to contradict recent reports from victims who were shamed by the BDSM scene when they came forward with allegations of abuse, though it shouldn’t. Klement acknowledges that a perceived culture of consent can inoculate the community against allegations of sexual violence, giving violators plausible deniability. But despite the presence of serial predators—which exist in every scene—another poll by the NCSF found that a majority of those in the BDSM community saw the subculture as “safer for them than mainstream society.”

Might the general public have something to learn from the way kinksters talk to each other before, during, and after a flogging sesh? Those who study BDSM believe the same rules of engagement could easily be applied to vanilla encounters.

“Affirmative consent is kind of like foreplay,” Susan Wright, member of the NCSF board of directors, told Broadly. “Talking about what you want to get into is such a sexy, vulnerable thing to do. It really heightens the intensity.”

This way of thinking about sex could also be useful for teaching consent to the young and horny. Last year, California became the first state to require high schools to promote affirmative consent in sex ed classes. The so-called “yes means yes” policy doesn’t focus on sketching out scenes beforehand, but it’s worth contemplating what might happen if sex educators took a page out of the dom’s playbook.

For her part, Klement wants to follow up her research with more qualitative analysis on rape myths and BDSM (she told me investigating rape myths is her greatest academic passion). Her research lab at the university—called the “Science of BDSM” and founded by Northern Illinois University psychology professor Brad Sagarin—is also studying the relationship between BDSM and altered states of consciousness like “subspace,” or the meditative flow that submissives can achieve when they fully relinquish control.

Other research indicates that practitioners of BDSM have more secure relationships and lower anxiety. “Our lab was the first in academia to look at ‘aftercare’ [the attention given to a partner at the end of a scene],” Klement said. “Brad looked at cortisol differences and the relationship closeness it can create. Academics were like, ‘Woah. We never thought that people who liked to beat the shit out of each other would actually care about each other afterwards.'”

UPDATE: Mountie pictured in BDSM photos no longer with RCMP

Source: CKNW.com.

CANADA – It looks like a controversial RCMP officer is no longer with the force.

In a statement to Global BC, RCMP Deputy Commissioner Craig Callens says Corporal Jim Brown’s carrer with the RCMP is over.

Brown is best known for sexually explicit photos of himself wearing little but his Mountie-issued boots… but a disciplinary hearing over the matter was recently “adjourned indefinitely.”

But Callens says “as the date for the [latest] hearing approached, [Brown] submitted his discharge papers.”

It caps four years since the Coquitlam Corporal was suspended with pay.

Brown was eligible to retire with full pension, after almost 28 years of service with the RCMP.

Embarrassing case

Brown’s disciplinary matter has been one of several that have left the Mounties with a tarnished image.

In 2012, bondage pictures emerged of Brown in sexually explicit poses with a woman.

They were posted by Brown on a personal account on the “bondage, BDSM & fetish” community Fetlife, which he believed would be private.

The pictures ended up being released to media, which subsequently sparked an internal R.C.M.P. investigation and Brown was put on paid leave.

Four-year wait for hearing

Over the past four years several disciplinary hearings have been set and cancelled.

Last week CKNW learned the matter has been adjourned indefinitely.

But we have now uncovered why that may be the case.

Brown collects years of service even while he is suspended, and with almost 28 years with the Mounties he already qualifies for a full pension if he retires.

That pension can “max out” if he hangs on for several more years.

In an email, the R.C.M.P. say their Code of Conduct only applies to current employees, and if a member retires they cannot have further internal discipline imposed on them.

Being suspended for four years with pay means taxpayers have paid Brown more than $335,000 while he’s been off the job.

Each year another $85,000 gets added to that tab.

Corporal keeping busy

He may not be on the job, but Brown has been active.

R.C.M.P. policy dictates he must report to the nearest detachment daily, or on a schedule agreed to by his commanding officer.

Mounties will not say how often that is, citing privacy concerns.

But other than that, what has the Coquitlam corporal been up to?

Court documents filed in a 2014 lawsuit against the Vancouver Sun and Postmedia describe Brown as a man harmed as a result of alleged defamation and public attention in this case.

The civil claim says Brown has suffered “severe emotional distress, psychological injury…anxiety and depression,” and has needed medical treatment and counselling.

None of those allegations have been proven in court.

However, that doesn’t mean Brown has been sitting at home.

A Twitter account belonging to Brown (@3rdCAV_Ghost) shows the motorcycle enthusiast on long trips around North America.

In the past few years he has attended numerous events with the Canadian Army Veterans motorcycle club.

With that group, Brown has gone on trips along the Oregon Coast to California, and to Edmonton.

He has also been active with various charitable initiatives.

Brown also hosts a weekend web-radio show on paranormal activity.

Under the pseudonym James Tyson, Brown appears on “Spaced Out Radio” every Saturday and Sunday.

His bio on the website describes Brown as “a 27-year veteran of the Royal Canadian mounted Police” who has worked across Canada.

Brown uses another Twitter account for his weekend radio show, @jamestysonSOR.

You can watch a video of Brown interviewing guests on his show.

Orlando’s S+M industrial troupe Genitorturers to celebrate 30th anniversary

USA – Has it really been 30 years? “Goths of a certain age” in the Central Florida area will no doubt remember the over-the-top music and stagecraft of the Genitorturers. For early ’90s Florida, this shit was wild.

The Genitorturers were a band that went all in on the S&M imagery that most industrial bands only flirted with at the time, with the group’s leader/dominatrix Gen usually attired in full-on vinyl and/or leather and meting out punishment to the unworthy (or worthy, or everyone really), alongside live piercings and other dark antics, against a sonic backdrop of heavy industrial metal.

This group was in prime “shock the squares” mode quite a bit before (fellow Floridian) Marilyn Manson took that sensibility to the bank, and never slowed down nor tamed their image for wider audience appeal. They’re throwing a 30th anniversary show at the Abbey on June 2nd, with special guests and former members returning to the show.

Tokyo court fines ‘vagina artist’ ¥400,000 in trial over ‘obscene’ art

Megumi Igarashi was fined for mailing 3-D image data for her vagina to donors of an art project

JAPAN – TOKYO – The Tokyo District Court on Monday handed down a fine to a female artist on trial for art works of her genitalia deemed “obscene,” reports Nikkan Sports (May 9).

Presiding judge Mihoko Tanabe fined Megumi Igarashi 400,000 yen for mailing links for the download of 3D-image data of her genitals to donors of an art project.

Tokyo Metropolitan Police first arrested Igarashi, 44, in July of 2014 for the distribution of the data. She was arrested again in December of that year for displaying a plaster cast of her vagina in an exhibition at an adult shop in Bunkyo Ward between October of 2013 and July of the following year.

The prosecution had claimed during the trial that Igarashi’s works too closely represent genitalia to be considered art, according to the Asahi Shimbun (May 9). “The shape is such that it is clearly female genitalia,” the prosecution said. “It can not be said that there is a higher artistic quality that lessens its obscene nature.”

Igarashi, who goes by the pseudonym Rokudenashiko (or Good For Nothing Girl), maintained that she made the works to remove the image of female genitalia being obscene. “These are art works,” the defense said. “They are not obscene.”

The court ruled in favor of Igarashi in the exhibition of the plaster casts.

The prosecution had sought a total fine of 800,000 yen.

Last month, Igarashi announced her engagement to musician Mike Scott, the founding member of the Waterboys, whom she met after word of her arrest made international news.

I think that Japan is not so free as we think. Also i think it’s a great shock for a Japanese boy to see a vagina for real. And for a Japanese girl to see a real penis for the first time.
