UK – A new study has suggested the most popular sex terms for 2024 – but how many do you know the meaning of?
Analysis of 160million Google searches revealed the growth and decline across more than 100 key kinky words over the last five years.
The five highest trending words included ‘findom’ – financial domination, where one gains pleasure from controlling another’s finances, and ‘thirst trap’ – where someone posts content with the intention of being desired.
But the most popular search term was ‘gooning’ – the act of achieving prolonged arousal through sensory overload, often involving hypnotic stimuli.
The findings – authored by Rachel Thompson, a leading sex and relationship expert and commissioned by Sensuali a sex positive platform for sensualists- also showed the word dogging was in decline over the past five years as a kink, with searches for ‘foreplay’ showing the most dramatic fall across the same period.
UK – The most popular fetishes have been revealed using Google Trends data, so which one are you into the most? MatressNextDay conducted the study and compiled a list of the top kinks
During the start of lockdown, couples spent more time exploring in the bedroom.
Whether it’s being adventurous alone or with a partner, people had time to find themselves between the sheets.
Now the most popular fetishes have been revealed using Google Trends data as MatressNextDay looked into the stats.
It found masochism has become one of the favourites in recent years with a 300% search increase compared to 2020.
Meanwhile in second place with a 250% surge in search in the last year is sploshing.
The company also worked with sex educator Kate Sloan who explained what exactly each fetish is.
Here are the top 10 fetishes, starting from the bottom…
10. Role Play
This came in at 10th place with a 5% search increase over the past year.
Role play is to act out or perform the part of a person or character/or pretending to be in a different situation.
Kate said: “Try meeting up with your partner at a bar or restaurant and pretending you’re two strangers on a first date.
“This is a good roleplay scenario for beginners because you can essentially play the character of yourself, just in a different situation.”
9. Sexual Humiliation
With a search increase of 26% over the past year, sexual humiliation came in at 9th place.
Kate said: “Erotic humiliation is the act of embarrassing someone in order to excite them sexually.
“It’s important to negotiate beforehand so you know which topics are and are not okay to use as humiliation fodder.
“For example, many people don’t like to have their appearance insulted, but find it arousing to be lightly teased about their arousal.”
8. Bondage
In 8th place came bondage, with a 31% search increase over the past year.
Kate said: “Bondage is the act of physically restraining someone for the purposes of erotic excitement.
“This can be done with rope and cuffs.
“Always leave at least two fingers’ worth of space between the restraints and the person’s skin so you don’t cut off their circulation.”
7. Cuckolding
Cuckolding is the 7th most trending fetish among Brits over the last 12 months with a search increase of 61%.
The sexpert explained: “To cuckold someone is to have sex with someone else in front of a partner.
“While many find this to be a hot fantasy, you don’t have to actually incorporate another person to experiment with cuckolding.
“Instead, you can talk dirty to each other about the third party that one of you could have sex with.”
6. Dominance
With a 62% search increase over the past year, dominance is the 6th most trending sex fetish.
Kate revealed: “Dominance is the act of controlling a session or ‘being the boss’ while your partner plays a more submissive role.
“It can be a good, healthy outlet for impulses that would be viewed as too controlling ‘in real life’.”
5. Objectification
In 5th place came objectification, with a 70% search increase over the past year.
Kates describes this as “the practice of treating someone like an object, whether that be an object of sexual desire or a literal object”.
She added: “Good aftercare is crucial for objectification play – spend some time with your partner(s) after a session just hanging out.
“This can help you transition more smoothly back into ‘real life’ after such a psychologically intense experience.”
4. Gagging
Gagging has received a search increase of over 70% as it came in 4th place.
According to Kate “to gag someone is to push an object/body part into their mouth”.
She explained: “Have a safe-signal, since the person won’t be able to talk.
“They could, tap their partner’s arm twice to signal that they want the gagging to stop.”
3. Impact Play
With a search increase of just over 140%, impact play came in at 3rd place.
Kate added: “Impact play can include spanking, paddling, flogging and caning.
“You can also use a stoplight safeword system, where green means ‘keep going’, yellow means ‘please pause and check in with me’.
“And red means ‘stop immediately’.”
2. Sploshing
In 2nd place with a 250% search increase is sploshing.
Sploshing is getting wet and messy during sex usually by incorporating food items.
Kate explained: “The most important thing with sploshing is to do it in a location that’s easy to clean, like in a bathtub.
“Don’t get any sugary substances in or near the vagina if possible, because of the risk of a yeast infection; if you do, rinse the area.”
1. Masochism
The fetish with the highest search trend over the past year is masochism with a 300% search increase compared to the year before.
According to Kate, this is a sexual interest in receiving pain, whether it’s through biting, scratching or spanking.
USA – Humans can get sexually aroused by so many different thingsjust look at the list of the most common sexual kinks in the U.S. Some people love getting spanked or talking dirty in bed. Some folks get aroused by elements of BDSM , which stands for bondage, discipline, sadism, and masochism; these people can get worked up (in the best way) when they’re being tied down and sexually humiliated.
Then there are the people who get aroused by food. Well, not exactly food in and of itself, but rather playing with food in a sexual context. Think, licking chocolate syrup off your partner’s chest, bathing nude in tub of spaghetti sauce, or even sitting butt-naked on a cake. Those who are turned on by the messiness of food have a kink known as “sploshing.”
What exactly is sploshing?
Sploshing, at its most basic level, refers to the act of incorporating food into your sex life. The sexual kink or fetish can take many forms, but in general, it happens when a person gets aroused by seeing and playing with copious amounts of food in a sexual setting. Sploshing is a subset of the “wet and messy” fetish (WAM), which also includes messy non-bodily substances like shaving cream, slime, paint, lotion, etc.
Some people may enjoy being covered in these substances, while others may enjoy covering others or watching overs get covered by them, explains Dr. Justin Lehmiller , a research fellow at the Kinsey Institute.
Is sploshing a common kink?
There’s no research that tells us how common sploshing is specifically, but there’s data out there that sort of points us in the right direction.
For his book , Lehmiller surveyed 4,175 Americans, asking them about their sexual fantasiesincluding vomiting in a sexual context. Those with a vomit fetish, known as emetophilia, are turned on by either vomiting on themselves or seeing others vomit. (People with this fetish may get particularly aroused by vomiting or seeing someone vomit on a penis from deepthoating.)
Emetophilia is technically adjacent to sploshing, since body fluids are considered a distinct fetish. Still, vomit play often involves feeding a partner, which of course, constitutes sploshing. Anyhow, 2.2% of people surveyed said theyve ever had a fantasy that involved vomit, and 0.4% said this was something they fantasized about often. Lehmiller notes it was one of the rarest sexual fantasies that emerged in his study.
Whats the appeal of sploshing?
Like any sexual interest, the appeal can vary from person to person. Some people might enjoy it as a form of BDSM play, in which there is a submissive or masochistic element (like humiliation) involved in getting covered by a messy substance, says Lehmiller.
Others may just enjoy the physical or tactile sensation of these substances, he adds.
Ayesha Hussain, co-creator of Pass The Porn and founder of The Violet , says, There are aspects of the mouth being a vessel that are inherently sexual. It opens, its moist, and when you get aroused, your mouth opens more and gets more lubricated. This, she explains, could be the root of arousal.
Theres also a certain taboo associated with sploshing.
How many times were we told not to play with our food? Ayesha asks. There is a very alluring quality to the forbidden.
How can I explore sploshing?
If you’re interested in food play but aren’t sure where to begin, Ayesha suggests bringing a plate of food into the bedroom. It can be anything: spaghetti, cucumbers, chocolate, etc. Then go ahead and eat it really slowly, allowing your partner to watch. Then switch. Watch every movement, taste every smell, imagine their saliva accumulating, and go from there!
If the idea of bringing food into the bedroom sounds a little too extremeor you don’t want to try sploshing, but are interested in seeing what the fuss is aboutthere’s always sploshing porn. (What isn’t there porn for?) Search “sploshing” on Pornhub, and you’ll find hundreds of videos involving people getting covered in food. There are also various Instagram accounts like this one dedicated to sploshing and other forms of WAM.
